Hon Demba Ali Jawo, former Information Minister under President Adama Barrow, in his recent interviews on President Barrow`s declaration of seeking a third term in office in 2026 said people who are closer to the president want him to be in the presidency forever.
Hon Jawo added that he is not surprised about the president’s announcement to seek re-election in the 2026 presidential election when due hence the 1997 constitution guaranteed him the power to seek election at any time.
“Many people have this belief that if President Barrow completes his second term in office he will also leave power because at the beginning when he was coming to power, he promised people that he will have only 3 years in power but he didn’t do that,” he reminded people.
Instead, “What we have seen was that shortly before the 3 years he said he will now complete his 5 years in power because that’s what the law grants him, he completed that and seek for another 5 years and the people gave him that one too (and now he still) it is like he is really enjoying presidency.”
However, he said “If I am the president when I complete this 2nd term I will leave power and allow others. So that he can gain more respect from people across the world, but if he allows himself to be defeated in the election while seeking his third term or something else happens that will spoil his reputation,” Hon Jawo stressed.
