The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recently organised a daylong forum on the roles and functions of the commission for the Regional Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in the North Bank Region.

The synergy was held in the Kerewan and was meant to create awareness among the Technical Advisory Committee, as part of the popularisation of the mandate of NHRC.

Dr. Saikou Kawsu Gasama, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission described the Technical Advisory Committee as an important arm of the region and therefore building the capacity on the roles and functions is very important.

He noted that the opening of regional offices aimed at bringing services to the doorstep of the people to enhance social cohesion in promoting and protecting human rights.

The sensitization would contribute to promoting education and partnership at the workplace to enhance better coordination on human rights.

Dr. Gasama called on TAC to promote Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA) to development to ensure all-inclusive participation.

Governor Lamin Saidykhan underscored the government’s commitment to the promotion of freedom of expression as a yardstick for promoting human rights.

He said the capacity development would contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights at the regional level and provide support to commission officials, complaints, and investigation of human rights abuse.

Abdou Manneh, the Regional Administrator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) for NBR and LRR disclosed that plans are in place to sensitize chiefs, councilors, and ward alkalolu on the roles and functions.

The forum helped to advocate for respect and promote human rights. The move also helped to strengthen traditional justice delivery and promote equity.

Jasong Sanyang, Legal Officer at NHRC said research, investigation, and monitoring help to gather appropriate information for decision-making.
