Notice: Sol Slim Njie says Banjul might experience another flash flood anytime

By Mustapha Jarju

Sol Slim Njie, a youth advocate and a concerned resident of Banjul has said the residents of Banjul City should expect to experience the reoccurrence of another flash flood in the City anytime from now after the last year’s heavy floods that led to internal displacement of thousands of Banjulians.

In his view, said he didn’t see enough work on-site regarding drainages and sewages to prevent another flooding. “We are just praying that the floods we experienced last year will not reoccur this year, though there is a possibility of it this year too.”

He emphasised the possibility of reoccurrence but said it can be averted if the government increases its efforts especially since most sewages in the city are having problems.

Meanwhile, he said that last year’s flood was also a result of road construction in the city while noting that recently there were lots of hard work on the sewages to avert further flooding in the “but I believe it is too late at this point of time,” he stated.

He explained that there are some streets in Banjul where the residents do open the drainages and clean them for free floating of water and it has become the norm and part of them.

He affirmed that now in Banjul when it heavily rained theyuse pumping machines to pump away the water to the sewage or canal.

He noted that the mangroves at the wetland encroached, and there are lots of structures that also block waterways including companies too.
