The Gambia Armed Forces have dispelled rumors that the army is currently conducting the selection of troops and training exercises for a possible military intervention in Niger.
Rumors have been milling around town that the army was preparing troops for any deployment to Niger for the reinstatement of ex-President Bazoum.
But when contacted on the issue, Lieutenant Colonel Lamin K Sanyang, Director of Press and Public Relations said: “I would like to clarify that GAF is not conducting any selection or training for deployment to Niger.
“We are currently busy with our routine training activities/exercises which include basic military training of recruits (Intake 38) at GAF Training School in Fajara as well as tactical cadre courses for junior and senior Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs)”.
Meanwhile, it has yet to be clear what is next for ECOWAS after its threat of military intervention in Niger was ignored by the junta in Niger.
The bloc’s leaders will meet on Thursday to discuss Niger’s coup.
