The Red Cross branch of the KanifingMunicipality last Saturday commemorated this year’s World Humanitarian Day at the Umoja Camp in Bwiam, West Coast Region.
The event was held under the theme No Matter What and it was aimed atrecognizing the resilience and commitment of aid workers, who risk their lives, to provide life-saving support to those in need.
The commemorative event brought together volunteers, Red Cross staff and partners of KM Red Cross Branch to celebrate the work of humanitarians and to highlight the challenges faced by Red Cross workers in their line of duty.
The attendees took part in various activities, including a panel discussion followed by a tree-planting exercise at Fatima Senior Secondary School in Bwiam. There was also a community engagement in the evening.
In a statement on the occasion, the acting Officer of the Red Cross KM Branch, EdrisaManneh, dilated on the importance of supporting aid workers. He stated: “Our work is underpinned by the bravery, compassion, and selflessness of millions of humanitarians around the world, who dedicate their lives to helping others. We must do everything we can to protect them and ensure they can continue to operate safely.”
Mr. Manneh said the KM branch of the Red Cross is committed to responding to the needs of vulnerable communities in The Gambia, providing support in areas such as health, disaster management and social services.
He emphasized that the celebration of World Humanitarian Day offers an opportunity for the recognition of the vital work of aid workers and to inspire others to get involved in humanitarian causes.
