PDOIS To Articulate Position On Claims Constitution Crashed At NA-Sources

The PDOIS will give its reaction to the claims by some politicians that the draft constitution crashed in the hands of the people’s representatives, The Voice has gathered.
The 5th Legislature has been blamed by some politicians for ending The Gambia’s dream of ushering in a new constitution.

After months of construction and heavy investment, the draft constitution seemingly breathed its last breath at the National Assembly when members overwhelmingly voted against it.
Currently, efforts are being scaled up to revitalize it but sticking points remain.
Dr. Muhammad Ibn Chambas of the International IDEA was lately in Banjul to support the resuscitation efforts of the strategic national document.

However, up to the time of going to press, the Gambia government has not shown any indication that it will budge on its position of a watered-down constitution. The government has since indicated that the draft new constitution should not be passed lock, stock and barrel.
But the opposition, especially the country’s biggest opposition party, UDP, has been insisting that the draft be passed in its entirety.

But as efforts are being stepped up to resuscitatethe draft new constitution, the 5th Legislature now has to deal with the allegation that it failed at the instance of the members.
The NAM for Brikama North cum the Minority Leader of the House, Alagie S. Darboe, denied this.

But sources said the PDOIS will be convening a press conference that will deal with this allegation as well as give its perspective on related matters.
Sources hinted that Halifa Sallah and PDOIS executives will face journalists this week at the party HQ in Serekunda.
