The North Bank Region Police Commissioner Ansumana Kinteh has confirmed that the Police in the region have impounded a Senegal-bound vehicle with 100 bags of fertilizer meant for Gambian farmers.
According to Commissioner Kinteh, a mini-truck was intercepted during border patrols and its cargo of 100 bags was confiscated.
The regional police chief informed The Voice on Wednesday that some people have been arrested in the operations as they reportedly attempted to smuggle the fertilizer through Amdallah to Senegal.
He explained that the consignment was a subject of litigation, involving a Gambian seller and Senegalese buyers.
The seized fertilizer has been handed over to the GGC’s depot manager at Barra for safekeeping, Commissioner Kinteh revealed.
He told this medium that the bags of fertilizer were marked Not To Be Sold Outside TheGambia.
Meanwhile, according to the regional police chief, 35 bags of fertilizer have been entrusted to Kerr Jaine Alkalo for safekeeping following the disappearance of the buyers.
The stocks will be later transported to GGC in Kerewan, he added.
Already, the police have delivered to KerewanGGC 35 bags of fertilizer seized in their NjaineSanjal operations, and the suspects were granted bail.
According to Commissioner Kinteh, 10 bags were confiscated in Kuntair but the owners disappeared in the bushes as the police attempted to arrest them.
The NBR Governor Lamin Saidykhan and members of the Technical Advisory Committee(TAC) commended the police for their interventions and praised Commissioner Kintehfor promoting transparency and accountability in sharing with the authorities details of their operations.
