Outspoken Muslim Scholar, Imam Abdoulie Fatty has said the Executive Director of anti-FGM campaign group, Gamcotrap, Dr. Isatou Touray, has no audacity to call for his arrest.
Imam Fatty’s reaction came following the recent statement by Dr. Touray calling for his arrest as she described his comments as “Inciting violence against anti-FGM campaigners.’
“What capacity does she (Isatou Touray) has in this country to call for an arrest of someone, what power does she have, she should go and learn the law. Who is she to advise the IGP to arrest me, what have I done, who is she to advise the government to arrest me, is she an adviser to the police, or is the IG working under her,” Imam intensively asked during an interview with The Voice.
“What hurts her is the money that was paid, not the statement I uttered hence I have been talking about this issue since the time of former president Yahya Jammeh,” he stated.
The prominent Islamic Imam stressed that Dr. Isatou Touraywanted to imprison a pregnant woman, a breastfeeding mother, and an old woman who is about 90 years old, arguing that if they went and rescued those people and paid their fine, “Who amongst us is a criminal? And who amongst us wants to destroy this country,” Imam Fatty asked rhetorically.
Imam Fatty pointed out that they have been advocating for the issue of FGM since their forefather’s generation, saying they want to know how much cash was given to Dr. Isatou Tourayand her organization to make this campaign.
However, he urged the Gamcotrap leader not to bring any controversial issue in this country, saying that people of this country are living peacefully with FGM, hence some are practicing it and others are not. “We advocate for peace. Her statement has not changed anything because this is in the ‘Deen’ and we will continue talking about it till the last day.”
