By Mustapha Jarju

Safe Hands for Girls Foundation on Tuesday donated varieties of seedlings to the Bakau Women Gardeners at a ceremony organized at the Bakau Women`s Garden, Bakau.

The donation was part of the Foundation’s efforts to empower women and contribute to agriculture, to uplift and support women in various sectors, which brings the idea of helping the Bakau women Gardeners enabling them to cultivate their land effectively and sustainably and promote their economic empowerment.

Speaking at the presentation, Jaha Dukureh, the Founder of Safe Hands for Girls Foundation said that whatever she is doing is to try to uplift women out of poverty, saying that her foundation`s objective is not only about ending FGM.

“I come from Gambisara, my mother was a market vendor who sold palm oil, and fish among others, so today I am here and whatever I do is a testament to who she is, and it is important for me to continue helping Gambian women.”

Madam Jaha stated that the support is not limited to only BakauWomen but they have a similar project in Farafenni and farming is part of her dream.

Musu Sidibeh, a Gardener, said seedlings donated would be of good help to them as they were facing a lot of seed constraints and they had not gotten good seeds to prepare for their gardening session.

“Our support in this garden is our children who used to come with us in the Garden as early as 7 a.m. and this support will help us a lot in taking care of our families.”

Another gardener, Aja Sally Kamba Njie, expressed gratitude to Jaha for the gesture, saying the donated seed is their priority because is one of the challenges they are facing in the garden hence it is expensive for them to purchase seeds.
