The Chairman of the Brikama Area Council (BAC), Yankuba Darboe, has revealed that he could have stayed in the US if he heeded talks back home that he would be arrested over the recent grisly shooting of paramilitary officers if he returned home.
Yanks said he’s not faint-hearted and therefore, decided to return amidst the speculations.
“What I told them was that they just want to know whether I am a coward or not but if am a coward, I would have stayed there,” he explained to reporters as he emerged from the Banjul Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Darboe further explained that it was alleged in some quarters that he bankrolled the alleged killers of the officers and that the prime suspect in the murder and injuring of the officers was a staff of BAC. This, Darboe went on, was a figment of someone’s imagination and was borne out of malice.
On the Gambia government spokesperson’s allegation on Coffee Time With Peter Gomez that the murder suspect was a BAC staff, Darboe said legal action could have been instituted against Mr. Sankareh if the BAC was not a public entity. The BAC chair though said Sankareh’s utterances were directed towards him.
“The day that statement was uttered was the day I arrived in New York. I was receiving calls from everywhere, and everyone was worried even in America. My host couldn’t tell me this. He waited until I returned home and openedthe Facebook. I asked him what was happening in The Gambia. He told me he wanted to inform me but he decided to wait until I returned home,” he stressed.
He, however, pointed out that the truth shall set him free, saying Sankareh has lied against him. Darboe argued that Sankareh would no longer be taken seriously by his words.
