The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered the remand in custody of one Maimuna Jallow for allegedly causing the death of her five-month-old baby by exposing her to danger.
Maimuna was yesterday arraigned before Magistrate Mben Faal for allegedly causing the death of her child within five months of its birth but when the charge was read to her, she denied responsibility.
Magistrate Faal then ordered her remand at Mile II, pending the transfer of the case to the High Court as, according to her, the lower court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the matter. The alleged offense, she stated, borders on manslaughter. Manslaughter, magistrate Faal continued, is a capital offense and is punishable by life imprisonment.
According to the particulars of the alleged offense, Maimuna Jallow on or about 4 October 2023, at ManjaiKunda, willfully caused the death of her child aged five by exposing her to danger.
She was represented by counsels Muhammed Deen and Yunusa Baldeh during yesterday’s court proceedings.
