OMVG Moved to MECNA

The OMVG is now under the purview of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources (MECNA), The Voice learned.
Before its move to MECNA, OMVG was under the Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources.
The date and reason for moving the river basin project to MECNA was unclear to The Voice at the time of going to press but a senior government official said since OMVG is also about clean energy and water, it’s understandable that it has now been moved to MECNA “because water is a natural resource”.
When it was under the Department of Water Resources, OMVG was led in The Gambia by Mr.Bai Sillah. During this time, OMVG embarked on ambitious energy generation projects for the member countries of The Gambia, Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Guinea Conakry under the West Africa Power Pool(WAPP) project.
The idea was to integrate the regional power pool through the 240kwt Keleta, 128 kwt Sambagalo and 125kwt Koribakoro power projects.
The OMVG aims to effectively and efficiently manage transboundary water resources.
However, some experts believe that its future could be threatened if practical climate actions are not taken.
Experts believe climate change could create warming water conditions that may affect OMVG’s ability to generate electricity and protect biodiversity and water resources.
