The Special Operation launched by the Gambia Police Force (GPF) and its partners to clear roads of illegal structures has now reached the heart of Serekunda, where structures were yesterday pulled down amidst heavy security presence.
Backed by armed police, members of the National Guards, and the paramilitary, the operation in the Gambia’s most densely populated city saw the demolition of structures on the city’s busy Sayerr JobeAvenue.
There were pockets of resistance to the exercise but they could not be sustained to prevent the tearing down of the roadside structures deemed illegal by the authorities.
The GPF is prosecuting the Special Operation alongside the National Roads Authority (NRA), the National Disaster Management Agency(NDMA), and the Gambia Transport Union(GTU).
The spokesperson of the GPF, Cadet ASP Modou Musa Sisawo, was on the ground during the Serekunda demolitions, and according to him, the exercise was in continuation of what began last week.
Meanwhile, the Special Operation began at the Serekunda suburb of Old Jeshwang last week. That operation was not also without trouble as a dozen youths were arrested for obstructing officers from carrying out orders
