The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court will next month open trial in an alleged attempted rape case brought against a Senegalese national.
Aniya Touray appeared before Magistrate Mben Faalon Wednesday to take his plea over a charge of attempting to rape an 11-year-old girl in Bakoteh.
The court heard that the accused, Aniya Touray, on or about 29 October 2023, took the minor to an incomplete building with the intent to rape her.
He denied the charge.
State prosecutor S.L Kebbeh urged the court to deny Touray bail as, according to him, he is not a Gambian and may jump bail if granted liberty as the case proceeds.
The accused, however, told the court that he never committed any criminal act since he came to The Gambia.
The presiding magistrate, having heard from both the prosecution and Touray, ruled that the accused is entitled to bail, adding that the alleged offense is bailable.
She then granted him bail in the sum of D50,000 and as part of the bail requirement, he must provide two Gambian sureties, who must possess valid ID cards.
The prosecution meanwhile sought an adjournment for a full trial, which was granted and the case adjourned 21 December 2023.
