By: Nicholas Bass

As a showcase of constructive opposition in state governance, an opposition National Assembly Member (NAM) of Gambia National Assembly (NA) Hon. Madi Ceesay has commended President Adama Barrow’s administration for establishing a Commission of Inquiry to inquire alleged financial inadequacies and related corruption allegations surrounded certain Local Councils in the country, calling on other good citizens to join him applauding President Barrow.

Hon. Madi Ceesay who made this remarkable commendation is a representative of Serrekuna West in Kanifing Municipality under the ticket of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).

Hon. Ceesay, who was responding to an exclusive interview with The Voice, emphasized the importance of the State backed Commission of Inquiry saying it will be a land mark precedent to strongly discourage local councils from misappropriating public funds in future. He expressed confidence that no patriotic Councilor, Chairperson, or Mayor of a Local Council will condemn any national investigations into Local Council operations to achieve quality Local Government for the general good of Gambia.

While showering praises on the Gambian Leader for sanitizing Local Councils via Commission of Inquiry, Hon. Ceesay also urging the President to replicate same to his Central Government as he put it that there has been persistent allegations of diverting  millions of state funds to personal use by some Government functionaries.

Failure to do will be unjust between the Local Government and the Central Government in the quest to combat corruption.

He however, suggested to the Commission that prosecution for culpable council members should be part of its recommendations.
