President Adama Barrow has promised that his government will offer a “good price” for groundnut this year.
Despite falling short of announcing the farmgateprice for groundnut this season, President Barrow hinted that farmers can look forward to an attractive package, adding that his government has heavily subsidized groundnut farming this year.
“We already have a good price for farmers. We have subsidized groundnuts for farmers…highly subsidized for that matter,” the Gambian leader told journalists on Monday before crossing over to the North Bank Region to begin a 16-day mandatory nationwide tour.
According to him, 48% of groundnut farming has been subsidized in 2023.
On the countrywide tour, President Barrow said: “It’s a constitutional requirement that the President should go and dialogue with the people. Basically, that’s what we are going to do to dialogue with them, we listen to them to know what is their problem and we tell them what is our policy going forward.”
He explained that the presidential delegation was thrilled and buoyed with vigor to meet the Gambian people.
“We are very much excited, full of energy because we think the last Meet-The-People-Tour, we made lot of promises and most of our promises are taking place and most are ongoing and I think we are fulfilling the demands of the people,” he acknowledged.
