Former Gambian international Aziz Corr Nyang has come out tough on Gambia’s football authorities over his perception of bias in the selection of players for the senior national team, calling for an end to what, he called, favoritism in the selection of players.
The former Scorpions’ winger has also urged the national team head coach Tom Saintfiet to be “frank in his decisions”.
Nyang was reacting to the Scorpions’ 2-nil defeat to Ivory Coast in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers. The Gambia slipped to the Ivory Coast at Benjamin MkapanStadium in Tanzania.
“I have never seen this type of football also I have in my career never played in this type of system. If you want to play low-block defending then you need a striker like Badamossi that can hold the ball so the team can come up in the field and create fouls for the team,” Nyang said in a Facebook post followingGambia’s defeat to the Ivorians.
“Then you need midfielders like Hamza Barry and Mamadou Bajothat can give balls to Badamossi. But you start Dawda Ngum when he wins the ball, he gives it to Kessie and Fofana,” he wrote. Nyangcontinued: “Then they come with attack upon attack. When we win the ball, we give it to Ivory Coast every time. Look at Abdoulie JallowGermano he was playing right back yesterday.
Alieu Fadera played very very well. Tom Saintfiet also needs to have balls and take hard decisions, Musa Barrow is a very good player but if he is not playing good, you need to bench him and sometimes bench him for a game or two so he doesn’t feel untouchable. Look how Lamine Camara took the position of Cheikou Kouyateh in Senegal and few months Lamin Camara was playing U-20 football. We should stop favoritism in our selection.”
