The Gambia’s biggest opposition party has lost a high-value official as Momodou Sabally tendered his resignation to the party’s senior administrative secretary on Wednesday.
Before submitting his resignation letter to the UDP yesterday, Mr. Sabally was the UDP’s chief propagandist. He was selected as the party’s national campaign manager during its congress in Janjaburehsometime this year. His elevation to the position of UDP campaign manager was not without controversy as some party members accused him of scheming his rise through the party’s ranks to replace Karafa Sonkoas campaign manager.
However, Sabally became one of the most treasured officials of the UDP, enjoying almost a cult following in the rank and file of the party. He was credited in many quarters for injecting a new lease of life into the party after it went into hibernation following its defeat at the polls in 2021.
Sabally did not say exactly why he broke ranks with the UDP but said his decision to resign was a difficult one.
“It is a difficult decision to take but it is my opinion that this is in the best interest of both the party and myselfin view of current circumstances,” he said in his letter to the party.
“Accordingly, I have also decided to cease to be a member of the UDP. I wish to take this opportunity to express my profound thanks and appreciation to the leadership and members of this great party for all the love and support that they have shown me during the period I spent as a member of this great party,” he added.
He promised to surrender to the UDP yesterday the pickup vehicle that the party allocated to him for the past years.
“Kindly extend my special thanks and appreciation to the Party Leader and Secretary General for many reasons that I cannot state in one letter,” read Sabally’s letter to the UDP.
