The Manager of Jarra Soma Customs Post, Mr. Sanjally Kanuteh, has informed the GRA Board and management that the post has surpassed the D1.3M revenue target that the GRA has set for it.
He enthused that the Soma Customs Post had been doing “very” well in this revenue year.
“This is possible due to teamwork, determination, and the commitment of the staff to revenue collection,” Mr. Kanutehhighlighted as he spoke during a recent visit to the post by the GRA Board and management.
The Board recently embarked on a nationwide tour during which they visited customs offices in provincial Gambia.
Mr. Kanuteh commended the board and management for the visit to Soma Customs Post which, he said, will hugely lift the spirits and greatly boost the morale of staff on provincial postings. “We feel excited to interact and share our success stories and challenges with you and to see possible ways of helping us to address those issues for effective service delivery in revenue collection,” Mr. Kanuteh noted.
He spoke at length about the significance of the Digital Single Window Project which, he stated, has greatly facilitated cross-border trade.
He expressed “profound” gratitude and appreciation for the collaboration that his office has enjoyed and continues to enjoywith sister security agencies in the Lower River Region.
The Manager for Domestic Tax at Jarra Soma Branch, Musa Ndure, underlined the significance of reminding taxpayers about their tax obligations during such visits, emphasizing the importance of tax revenue to national development. He pointed out that tax mobilization is the mandate of the GRA but that tax compliance is everyone’s responsibility. He explained that tax revenue lessens the government’s dependency on foreign aid, reminding Gambians of donor fatigue in the donor community.
He thanked the GRA staff under the leadership of Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe for being the leading revenue collector in Africa. He also commended GRA’s management for introducing ASYCUDA World and the soon-to-be-introduced ITAS to boost revenue generation and ease the burden of taxpayers.
