Gambian President Adama Barrow has been named winner of the African Prize for Peace 2024.
This was announced when President Barrow received a delegation from the Select Committee of the African Conference for Promoting Peace at the State House last Friday to deliver a letter announcing the award.
A statement from the State House said the President of the Select Committee, Sheikh Abdullah Bin Bayyah, informed the Gambian President of the award.
President Barrow was recognised for his efforts in promoting peace and human dignity, and as an inspiration for other African leaders to emulate in building a peaceful and prosperous future for the African Continent.
Reacting to the news, President Barrow expressed gratitude for the nomination, and said: “I am grateful to receive such news. It is indeed a great honour to follow the footsteps of people like the former President Muhammad Buhari in receiving this recognition.”
The African Prize for Promoting Peace is a Mauritanian initiative established in 2020 in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum in the United Arab Emirates. Previous winners are former Presidents of Niger and Nigeria, Mohamed Bazoum and Buhari in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
The Gambian leader will receive the Award in January in Mauritania.
