The Gambia government is overhauling the ferry services, intending to upgrade it to a river transport authority, revealed the Managing Director of the Gambia Ports Authority.
“There is a total restructuring of the ferry services such that the view of the government is to amalgamate[it] into a wider river transport Authority because you may be aware that the prevalence of bridges along the river has also questioned the viability of running ferry service at certain points because of the new bridge in Bansang, Basse, and Fatoto. That’s why the need to restructure and rebrand the ferry services into an Authority,” the GPA boss Ousman Jobarteh informed journalists in a recent press briefing.
According to him, the restructuring of the Gambia Ferry Services will allow it to foray into the transportation of freight and passengers along the Gambia River this year.
