The former press secretary of Gambia Action Party Sheikhna Faal has expressed disapproval over President Adama Barrow’s decision to increase taxes, asserting that Gambians will suffer in 2024.
Speaking in an interview with The Voice, Faal said the increment of taxes will only increase the burden on poor Gambians and make life more difficult, adding that President Barrow has failed the citizens.
‘’The taxpayers voted for change but not dictatorial rule and the purpose of that change has been defeated,’’ Faal asserted.
He further stated that the tax increment is a clear indication of how things would unfold this year.
‘’I think President Barrow should focus on how to strategize to develop the country rather than focusing on politics. Barrow as a President should be more concerned about the welfare of the people because if the citizens are not happy, the government should take immediate action to address the situation,’’ he said.
Faal stressed that the country has been going through a lot of challenges and no sign of improvement from the government. This, he said, has worsened the situation.
He emphasized that the government needs to be alive to the plight and concerns of the citizens because they pay taxes and that their tax revenue should not go down the drain.
‘’I can attest that Barrow is following the footsteps of Jammeh and if care is not taken, the dictatorial tendencies will prevail,’’ Faal contended.
He accused lawmakers of not taking the lead, considering the power they have to make sure that taxes paid are put to good use.
‘’The Gambia is a sad nation. After gaining our independence for years, we are still struggling to stand firm and even make decisions. I always reiterate that this government has no plans for the country,’’ he argued.
“However, it is left to us the electorate to save the future leaders of this country by standing up firmly to fight and rescue Gambia. If not, those surrounding Barrow will continue to mislead him and that will only compound the problem,” stated Faal.
