The lady President of Niani Bakadaji women group and who double as rice farmer in Central River Region North has launched passionate appeal to government following poor performance of their rice fields in 2023 and as resulted to poor harvest and food insecurity.
Aja Nanding Jabbi from Niani Bakadaji was speaking to VOICE in Lower River Region on the sideline of Women Land Right Campaign organized by Action Aid International the Gambia with funding from the ROOTS Project. She noted numerous challenges faced by rice farmers, citing lack of tractors, power tillers for ploughing services, rice threshers as farmers resulted to use empty barrel to thresh rice, which contribute to post harvest losses.
She disclosed that rice fields are now affected by salt intrusion and therefore called on Department of Agriculture through agricultural projects to construct anti salt dykes to control salt intrusion. Madam Jabbi stressed that the community is face with food insecurity and call for more humanitarian assistance to complement their household’s food security.
