CASAI Takes Cybersecurity Awareness to School

The Center for the Advancement of Science and Innovations (CASAI) has taken cybersecurity awareness to school, starting with Kotu Senior Secondary School on Friday.

CASAI officials say cybersecurity awareness is important for Gambian schools and parents.

Speaking at Kotu Senior Secondary School, the Co-founder and CEO of CASAI, Mohamed Kah, stated that with the increasing use of technology in schools and at home, there is a growing need for cybersecurity awareness to protect students, parents, and schools from cyber threats such as hacking, phishing, and identity theft.

He pointed out that many people in The Gambia, including students and parents, may not be aware of the potential risks and dangers of using technology without proper security measures in place.

He explained that cybersecurity awareness campaigns can help educate students and parents about the importance of protecting their personal information online, such as passwords, financial information, and social media accounts.

“With the rise of social media and online communication, cyberbullying has become a major concern for students and parents. Cybersecurity awareness campaigns can help educate them on how to recognize and prevent cyberbullying,” CEO Khan told students.

Executive member of CASAI Abdul-Hakeem Akorede notedthat there is a need to promote responsible online behavior through cybersecurity awareness in schools as he called on parents to encourage students to practice responsible online behavior such as avoiding sharing personal information with strangers and being cautious when clicking on links or downloading files.

He added that cybersecurity awareness campaigns can also help to promote digital literacy among students and parents, teaching them how to use technology safely and securely.

“With the increasing focus on data protection and privacy regulations such as the GDPR, it is important for schools and parents to be aware of their responsibilities in protecting personal data and complying with these regulations,” Mr. Akorede explained to students.

For his part, Mr Paul Kamara also a member of CASAI said that by promoting cybersecurity awareness, schools and parents can help create a culture of cybersecurity, where everyone understands the importance of protecting themselves and others online.

“Overall, cybersecurity awareness campaigns are needed in The Gambia for schools and parents to protect against cyber threats, promote responsible online behavior, and ensure compliance with data protection regulations,” he added.
