Human rights Lawyer, Hassan Martin has accused the Barrow government of total negligence of people’s security while focusing more on politics.
“Currently this government is only focusing on politics in terms of looking at cross carpeting politicking and not focusing on the security of the people, how to deal with safety, and how to deal with people’s welfare. This has caused a lot of problems in the country,” Martin told The Voice in an interview following the recent murder cases.
The Human rights Lawyer, also a political activist, described the issue as a result of poor administration, stressing that the current problems are due to poor governance, and the poor security failure in the country.
“This is a worrying time for Gambians. There is a lot of anxiety as they go about their business and crime is rising and rampant everywhere. The two current murders have affected the business community because it makes them worried about the robbery and their safety,” he explained.
He pointed out that in the previous regime, the country had security with people going about their daily business without trouble, arguing that the Barrow administration had less vision and no direction for Gambians.
“Gambians must embrace themselves for the worst in terms of tackling crimes, and dealing with social issues. This government is not focused on handling social issues. The government has to stop politics and focus on the security aspect as to how to help Gambians to live a better life and protect their wellbeing,” he stated.
The Human rights Lawyer also accused the government of failure to investigate the root causes of issues, saying this is the reason behind the current security instability, crime surge, and the issue of youth policy.
According to him, Gambia under President Barrow will not only lose its sovereignty which is already sinking but may even lose its nationhood in terms of being a failed state, adding the reality is that one cannot have a society that has no security and people cannot live in a state of fear or false perception.
“I am urging the government to re-double their efforts when it comes to security because the security situation is not sustainable,” Martin asserted.
