Gambian Journalists Mourn Malick Jones

The news of the demise on Tuesday of seasoned broadcaster Malick Jones has sent a shockwave through the Gambian media fraternity.

Multitudes of journalists turned out yesterday to pay their last respects to the late accomplished broadcaster.

Former information minister Nana Grey-Johnson, co-publisher of The Point Mr. Pap Saine, Managing Editor of Foroyaa Mr. Sam Sarr, General Manager of The Standard Newspaper Pa Sallah Jeng, Daily News publisher Madi M.K Ceesay and Managing Director of The Voice newspaper Mr. Musa S. Sheriff, among other high-profile journalists, joined friends, family, and acquaintances of the late distinguished media personality at the Old Jeshway Cemetery to bid farewell to one of founding members of the Newspaper Association (NEPA), whose career spanned several decades, leaving an enduring impact on the Gambia’s media landscape.

He was a versatile football commentator and a distinguished media consultant. His rise through the ranks at the State broadcaster was a glaring indication of his skills in broadcasting and dedication to service. By dint of hard work, he rose from the position of announcer to principal producer. He also carved his name on the international stage, especially during his time with the BBC as a football commentator for the 2010 World Cup.

His demise has not only left a void in the Gambian media landscape but also in the hearts of those who knew him.Asidefrom his broadcasting skills, the late Malick Jones was an adept administrator. He served as a permanent secretary at the information ministry.

“His ability to transition seamlessly from broadcasting to administration and then to media consulting illustrates his diverse skill set. Jones was not just a voice behind the microphone; he was a leader, an innovator, and a mentor,” wrote one commentator.

“As the community comes together to mourn, the outpouring of condolences and tributes is a testament to the respect and admiration Jones garnered throughout his career. His legacy is reflected in the shared memories and stories from colleagues, listeners, and friends,” added the commentator. 

“Malick Jones’s life and career were marked by passion, dedication, and excellence. His contributions to broadcasting, administration, and sports commentary have left an indelible mark on The Gambia’s media landscape and beyond. As we remember his legacy, we are reminded of the power of media to inform, educate, and inspire,” said the commentator.
