The Kanifing Municipal Council’s Agriculture Committee, on Tuesday, 20th February 2024, donated 300 bags of fertilizer to women farmers to contribute to the growth of agriculture.

“I’m pleased to announce that 300 of organic bags of fertilizers each weighing 50kg have been allocated to four wards within our jurisdiction,” said the chairperson of the Agriculture Committee Kebba Touray.

The Chairperson said they are committed to providing innovative solutions to enhance the livelihood of their gardeners and farmers, “the eco soil organic fertilizer initiative represents a holistic approach to sustainable agriculture promoting soil health via diversity and environmental contributions”.

“By harnessing the power of organic materials and environmentally friendly practices, we seek to address the challenges faced by our local agricultural community while fostering resilient and adaptability in the phase of climate change,” he said

According to him, the initiative aligns with the principles of section 67 of the local government act which mandates the provision of agriculture to their communities, “it is with duty and privilege to support our gardener and farmers in their endeavors”.

Musa Camara, one of the beneficiaries of the fertilizers said they are really glad to witness this day, “although we never expected this but we are grateful for it”.

“I want to encourage the youth to take agriculture seriously because some of their parents paid their school fees with the money made from agricultural practices so let them get close to their parents and help them work at the farm, these fertilizers are here to help us”

He, however, stressed some of the challenges they are facing, “ some of the problems we are facing is lack of storage facilities, we don’t have a place to store our goods and also need supportive gears, we really need this especially in the raining season to prevent certain injuries”.
