Influential local politician Abdoulie Bojang has indicated that lax border control could endanger national security as he challenged the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) to tighten border security.
“The Gambia Immigration Department should tighten security at our borders. They must ensure a thorough background check of anyone coming into The Gambia. The porous borders should be constantly patrolled to prevent crimes in the country,” Bojang, who expressed his intention to represent Foni Kansala in the National Assembly in the last legislative elections, said in an interview with The Voice on Wednesday.
He explained that even the police confirmed that most of the violent crimes committed in the country were perpetrated by aliens.
“This should be a grave cause for concern to the sitting President,” Bojang added.
He described The Gambia as a pathetic nation, expressing fear over the fate of the country’s future leaders, saying the crime trajectory that the country has taken should make everyone sit up with concern.
“I challenge the government to jealously guard the country’s security to prevent crimes. One of the most important issues that the President and government should prioritize is security because, without robustsecurity, the crime rate will continue to peak,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Bojang contended that the country’s “slow” pace of development is due to a lack of good governance and urged the government to spring to action to deliver development for Gambians.
“We lack good and visionary leaders, who will steer the affairs of the country, for rapid development,” he argued.
He blamed the government for all the stresses that the country is facing, arguing that the government appointssquare pegs in round holes.
“I urge the government to take the lead to eradicate favoritism, politics of interest, and nepotism in the country. Since this government took over, the country is facing a lot of challenges yet no mechanism is put in place by the government to address citizens’ concerns,” Bojang stressed
