Somebody Got to Do It (SGDI) in partnership with Gambia Youth Chamber of Commerce (GYCC) over the weekend gave food supplies to over 60 families in the Foni village of Tampoto.
SGDI is a US-based lifestyle clothing brand dedicated to philanthropic work, especially in Africa.
The donated provisions included rice, onions, sugar, oil, tomato paste, and dates.
Founder of SGDI Mr. Youssouph N’Diaye explained during the presentation ceremony that he was engaged in charity work in Philadelphia for the past eight years before extending his reach to Africa.
“We have been in Senegal for three consecutive years and this year, we decided to visit The Gambia for the first time to touch the lives of the needy and we plan to reach every country each year in West Africa,” he disclosed.
“We understand a lot of people are in need but we just made sure the first people we assist in our first time in The Gambia are the ones who really needed it. When we reached out, Tampoto was identified and we discovered that they need the assistance, which is why they are the first beneficiaries,” he explained.
The CEO of GYCC, Fatima Muloshi, also spoke at the presentation ceremony and according to her, SDGI and GYCC targeted 60 families for food assistance but were able to extend the support to over 100 families due to a surplus.
“Helping a community is a necessity as we are all aware of the economic situation of the country. Prices for food commodities are skyrocketing. Therefore, there is a need for collaborative efforts to ensure we uplift the less privileged,” noted the GYCC CEO.
“You need not to be wealthy to be able to help people. You can use your influence and any other means possible to assist people in a way that’s not going to affect you,” she added.
Momodou Badjie, Alkalo of Tampoto thanked the donors for choosing his community and prayed that the donors continue to get the wherewithal to touch lives as they did with the people of his village.
He called for further collaboration to help improve the quality of life of the people in Tampoto.
