Oyster collectors in Memmeh, Jokadou are seeking support to acquire engine boats, shoes, gloves, life jackets, and refrigerators from development partners, NGOs, and the government to enhance their productivity and soften their daily challenges at work.
Speaking to The Voice in Memmeh, Jokadu in the North Bank Region, Sofie Jatta member of the oyster collector outlined some of their need which included engine boats, shoes, gloves, life jackets, and refrigerators while describing oyster collection as challenging work.
But quickly noted that the collection of oysters does contribute to strengthening women’s participation in boosting food and nutrition.
Madam Jatta said reliable equipment and capacity building are crucial to their work, noting that capacity gaps exist and there is a need for development partners to support and provide relevant training that can also encourage collectors to promote the culture of savings.
Due to limited oysters in the area, she said, oyster farmers travel kilometers away in search of it, while explaining the process they go through before being able to harvest them.
The only means of collecting oysters is the use of traditional boats without an engine and safety remains a greatest challenge.
She explained further that the expansion of the electricity supply to Memmeh would empower women to have fridges to preserve and reduce post-harvest losses.
Meanwhile, she said the capacity building would contribute and empower collectors to adopt best practices that can contribute to mitigating the effect of climate change and protecting mangroves.
