Imam Baba Leigh Responds to Imam Fatty’s call for debate on FGM/C

By Arret Jatta

Imam Baba Leigh has said that he will not engage himself in any public debate with Imam Abdoulie Fatty saying, Islam doesn’t advise them to debate but engage in dialogue instead.

He made the statement when asked at a press conference on Sunday if he would consider a public debate that Imam fatty challenged him on about the issue of the repealing of the FGM/C law at the National Assembly.

“In a debate there will be a winner and a loser and definitely I don’t want Abdoulie Fatty to lose. I know he is cursing me every day but I see that curse as prayers, let him continue cursing but I will pray for him, may God guide him and show him the right way and give him modesty and humility that he can come back to the society and protect the society,” he said.

On the 26th February, Standard Newspaper wrote that Islamic cleric Abdoulie Fatty has challenged Imam Baba Leigh to a public debate on FGM.

Imam Fatty is the key proponent of the crusade to decriminalize female genital mutilation which he refers to as female circumcision while Imam

Leigh supports the anti-FGM brigade.

“Islam doesn’t advise Muslims to debate, Islam advised us to engage in dialogue, there is a whole chapter in the Holy Quran on that. There is a big verse stopping Muslims from debating with even Christians much more Muslims,” Imam Leigh remarked.

“I have no doubt in Imam Fatty’s knowledge I have no doubt in his fluency where I have doubt is his credibility because I saw him with the past regime and I have seen him with this regime and this people they have no single moral authority to talk to their congregation,” he added.
