Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Rohey John Manjang has clarified to the National Assembly that her ministry is unaware of confiscated timber at the Gambia Port Authority (GPA).
She was answering to the lawmaker of Badibou Central, Sulayman Saho who had asked the minister to furnish the assembly about some confiscated timber logs at the port of Banjul during questions and answers session.
“Specifically as far as my ministry is concerned no timber was confiscated at the port,” the Minister stated.
According to her, since the ban on the exportation of timber came into effect in July 2022, the department of forestry has not issued any license for the export of timber adding that the ban on timber is still in force.
“It is important for us to note that importation of non- threatened species of timber and local consumption is not banned,” she added.
