In an ongoing trial involving an administrative staff of the Gambia College, Alasana Janneh failed to proceed before principal magistrate Anna O. Mendy of the Brikama magistrates’ court due to the absence of the accused on two subsequent adjournment dates.
It could be recalled that Mr. Janneh stands accused of ‘Abduction and Assault’ meted to a female student of the Gambia College in contravention of sections 124 and 228 of the criminal codes of the Gambia. The incident allegedly occurred on September 19th 2023 at the Gambia college Brikama Campus.
ASP Buteh Sawaneh put to the notice of the court that the accused person, Alasana Janneh, has failed to appear for continuation of testimony by PW1 (the victim).
“Mr. Janneh failed to appear in court for continuation of proceedings on February 29th and March 27th subsequently and no reason has been advanced to the prosecution,” he said.
He, therefore, applied to the court to have his bail revoked and for the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest and detention at the mile 2 central prison so that there can be speedy trial.
“Considering that the charge against the accused is a heinous crime, in fact we are not sure if he is in the jurisdiction or not. We want the accused arrested and detained at mile 2 central prison for fair and speedy trial. Otherwise, the burden of his absence will be on his sureties who are innocent in this matter,” ASP Buteh Sawaneh told the court.
Principal magistrate Anna O.Mendy granted the application made by the prosecution, citing its merit in the fair and speedy justice delivery to parties involved.
The matter is adjourned to 18th April, 2024
