The Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia (UTG) Professor Herbert Robinson has presided over the 3rd edition of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie Pan African Conference on Scientific Publication and Research.

The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Technology (MoHERST) in collaboration with (MoHERST) hosted the (AUF), Pan African Conference.

The two-day conference was used to share experiences and identify partnership opportunities between countries and higher education institutions in the region, in terms of promoting scientific publication and the international mobility of students.

Professor Herbert Robinson said the primary objective of the conference is to facilitate the exchange of experiences and discussions on areas of partnership opportunities which are aimed at promoting scientific publication and enhancing the international mobility of students within Africa.

He explained that research output in African academic institutions is generally very low. Scientific research and publication have been biased toward the West – individuals and institutions with the financial resources which has promoted research in some parts of the world and stifled it in other parts of the world, particularly Africa.

“We are gathered here today, united by a shared commitment to advancing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and promoting academic mobility across our diverse continent,” he noted.

He continued that, as they delve into discussions on enhancing regional collaboration, they should seek out opportunities to bridge linguistic barriers, forge new partnerships, and empower the voices of underrepresented communities in the academic discourse.

Minister of Higher Education, Professor Pierre Gomez alluded to challenges that researchers and scientific institutions are battling with.

“Research is something that is fundamental to promote sustainable development,” he said

He called for the need to develop research infrastructure and research culture for the better understanding of students and lecturers.

Minister Gomez noted that universities and research are well kept in the four corners of the room, however, there is a need to expose them and make them visible to the public because research should be able to create job opportunities.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon Momodou also highlighted the importance of the meeting adding that the meeting will promote scientific excellence for regional development and cooperation.

AUF Rector, Professor Slim Khalbous said universities have a role in the advancement and development of society because universities are meant to serve as a change agent for the betterment of all.
