Concerned Citizen Raises Alarm Over Rate of Deforestation in Gambia

Some community forests in rural Gambia have been fast-depleting in the past few years due to indiscriminate tree felling but a concerned Gambian Mr. Musa Jallow said the trend could be reversed if stringent measures against deforestation were put in place.

A native of Kiang in the Lower River Region, Mr. Jallow told The Voice in an interview that the rate of forest destruction in his area and other parts of the country was unacceptable.

“The authorities need to man up and put an end to the destruction of our forests. Our forests here in Kiang have been denuded and it is high time the authorities stepped up to the plate,” he emphasized.

According to him, the cost of inaction could be costlier than action when it comes to deforestation.

“We depend on our forests for food and to protect us from heavy winds, rains, and storms. We should not, therefore, allow them to be destroyed just for the interest of a few people,” he stated.
