The Brikama Magistrates’ Court presided over by Magistrate Anna O. Mendy has ordered the remand in custody of a certain Ebrima Kalilu Juwara for allegedlyobtaining D2, 000,000.00 by pretenses.

Juwura, according to court records, sometime last year induced one Malick Sanyang to deliver to him D2M on the pretext that he owned four plots of land in BrikamaFula Kunda, measuring 22m by 18m, 15m by 24m, 20.5m by 27m and 28m by 15m, which he wanted tosell.

The accused denied the charge, which carries an imprisonment of up to three years.

At this juncture, ASP Buteh Sawaneh, representing the Inspector General of Police, objected to the granting of bail to Juwura. He argued that the accused previously had criminal records with the police but never respected one of his bail requirements to report to the station.

ASP Sawaneh further argued that Juwara might not have dependable sureties to vouch for him due to the amount of money involved in the case and therefore, applied to the court to order his remand at the State Central Prison in Banjul.

His application was granted.

The case resumes on 15 May 2024
