The United Democratic Party’s spokesperson for the North Bank Region (NBR) Karamo Njie has said voters in Niumi should learn from the “disastrous failure” offerry services to turn their back on President AdamaBarrow and the NPP in 2026.
According to Mr. Njie, the people of Niumi were enduring untold hardship and undergoing huge humiliation thanks to the disruption in the ferry services.
“The people of Niumi are going through unbearable hardship and humiliation as they now resort to boats for their transportation needs across the Banjul/Barra ferry route. Old women are slipping into the water as they are being carried to or from the boats. This is really disheartening,” he bemoaned.
The regional spokesman of the Gambia’s largest opposition party argued that if President Barrow and his government had the people of Niumi at heart, they would’ve not allowed the ferry situation to degenerate from bad to worse all these years.
“They do not care about the plight of the people of Niumiotherwise they would have dealt with the ferry issue a long time ago. Despite paying their taxes and rates, this government never cared about the people of Niumi and they are also contributing to the upkeep of the President and his ministers,” he stated.
“This is all the more reason I would like to advise the voters in Niumi to turn their back on President Barrow and his NPP when they come to seek your votes in 2026,” he added.
Njie contended that the government wants to use the ferry issue as a political capital for the 2026 general election.
“They want to bring the new ferries during the electioneering. The people of Niumi should not allow themselves to be fooled. They left you in the cold for many years and now, they want to use the new ferries in their 2026 campaign to give you the impression that they cared about you,” he underscored.
Meanwhile, Mr. Njie called on the Gambia government to expedite the return to service of Kunta Kinteh and Kanilaiferries
