The United Democratic Party (UDP) is set on a legal path with regional governors after it instituted legal action against them over the legality of their appointments, judicial sources hinted this medium.
The Gambia’s largest opposition party, according to sources, last week filed a lawsuit atthe Bundung High Court against theappointment of governors of the various administrative regions of the country, hoping that the court would declare their appointments illegal as per the Local Government Act (LGA).
The UDP, sources, said is relying on Section 123(1) of the LGA to ask for the disengagement of the governors.
This particular section provides that: “There shall be an Area Administrator for each Local Government Area, who shall be a senior civil servant, appointed by the President”.
The UDP believes that the President has flouted this particular provision.
The State is expected to reply to the party.
