Migration Activist Says Deportation Flight from Germany Set for 28 May

Yahya Sonko, a migration activist, has hinted that some Gambian youth are being detained in Germany to face a possible chartered flight deportation later this month.

“In light of recent developments, it has come to our attention that numerous Gambians residing in Germany have been detained in preparation for a chartered deportation flight scheduled for 28 May 2024. This situation is of significant concern, and we are taking all legally permissible steps to assist those affected,” he shared.

He said the deportation request was made by the German government but is yet to receive approval from the European Union.

“This evening, based on reliable communications with my close contacts within the EU and other sources, I can confirm that the deportation scheduled for 28 May 2024 was a request from the German authorities but has not been approved,” he stipulated.

He went further: “We urge the Gambian community, activists, and all supporters of human rights to come together during this critical time. Your involvement can make a significant difference in the lives of those who are currently detained and facing uncertain futures.”

According to Sonko, he has engaged with lawyers and other helpers to challenge several of these deportations.

“These legal processes are ongoing, and we remain committed to exploring every avenue to protect the rights and dignity of those at risk” he added.

“I strongly advise all concerned parties to immediately contact any individual who may be detained at the Pforzheim deportation detention prison. It is crucial to provide them with legal assistance and support as soon as possible to ensure their rights are protected and to explore all possible options to halt their deportation,” he urged.
