AGM’s stand on Government’s New Cement Tariffs on Bags Importations

By Association of Gambian Manufacturers (AGM)

The Association of Gambian Manufacturers (AGM) is deeply concerned about the challenges facing local manufacturing in The Gambia amidst increasing global competition and economic hardships. The pivotal role local manufacturing plays in driving economic growth, job creation, and innovation within our communities cannot be understated.

Let us not fall to the notion that manufacturing entities in other countries can provide prosperity to our economy. Cement is being sold at its lowest price. Scare mongering will not deter the commitment the Gambian Government has taken to ensure the prosperous of The Gambia! Cement prices have remained where they have been for the last year! No one in this economy is buying cement at D575! That is an outrageous statement to make!

Statement of Interests:

Local manufacturing serves as the backbone of our economy, generating significant economic activity, providing quality jobs, and supporting various industries. The multiplier effect of each manufacturing job created extends to related sectors such as transportation, retail, and professional services. Investing in local manufacturing is crucial for ensuring the economic stability and prosperity of our nation.

Recommendations:

AGM urges policymakers, business leaders, and the community to prioritize and support initiatives and policies that promote local manufacturing. The Barrow administration’s commitment to advancing local manufacturing is commendable, with investments in infrastructure, incentives, and a favorable regulatory environment. By safeguarding the future of local manufacturing, we secure numerous benefits for our economy and society.

It is imperative that we reject the notion that manufacturing entities in other countries can bring prosperity to our economy. The Association of Gambian Manufacturers remains steadfast in its dedication to promoting the growth and success of manufacturing in The Gambia through advocacy, education, and resource provision. Let us unite to ensure the thriving of our local manufacturers and contribute to the prosperity of our country.
