Ousainou Jarju Monday appeared before Principal Magistrate Anna O. Mendy of Brikama Magistrates’ Court on charges ofmurder.
Inspector Kemo Y. Manneh announced his appearance for the IGP, while the accused person was not represented by any counsel.
He is charged with “murder,” contrary to section 187 of the Criminal Procedure Code cap 10:01 volume III Laws of the Gambia 2009.
The indictment alleged that Ousainou Jarju, on the 24th day of August 2021 at Lamin CDC, Kombo North, with malice aforethought, caused the death of one Malick Bojang by stabbing him with a knife on his chest, thereby committed offence.
The punishment for murder in the Criminal Procedure Code is a death penalty.
Before the accused person took his plea, the prosecution applied under section 62 of CPC and legal notice number 3 to have the matter transferred to the special criminal division of the High Court of the Gambia as the charge is not suit for summary trial.
The prosecution further applied to the court to have the accused person remanded at the Mile II Central Prison pending the hearing of the matter at the special criminal division.
The court granted both applications made by the prosecution regarding them as meritious.
