Action Aid International the Gambia with support from UNFPA is implementing a training program for Traditional Communicators and media personnel on women in leadership held at Governor’s Office in Kerewan.
The theme of the training revolves around ‘Promoting Women’s Leadership through media training’ and it attracted some 25 participants from print, electronic and social media as well as traditional communicators.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Fatou JammehTouray of NBR underscored the significance of promoting women in leadership and therefore the engagement of media and traditional communicators would contribute to bring about positive behavioral changes. She notes that education plays and important role in human development and call on parents to support the education of girl child to complete higher education.
Governor Jammeh Touray says women are born to be leaders and reiterates the need for media and traditional communicators to use their platforms of educating and enlightening the public on the importance of women in leadership. She uses the moment to thank Action Aid International the Gambia and UNFPA for complementing government’s efforts in women empowerment drive.
For her part, Binta ML Ceesay, Women Rights Manager at Action Aid International the Gambia Head Office described the important roles media could play in breaking barriers through promoting dialogue of enhancing women in leadership positions. She said the move would contribute in broadening peace building initiative and accelerate sustainable livelihood development.
Madam Ceesay hailed Kerewan Area Council for the appointment of women as district tribunal court members, noting that it would empower women to seek for fair dispensation of justice. She assured of her office continued support in promoting women advancement.
Jonsaba Jawara, Rural Women Assembly representative said the promotion of women in leadership at grassroots level would contribute to encourage more women to seek for elected positions. She called on women to be proactive and support the education of girl child to complete higher education.
