The Chairman of Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG), Seedy Cham, has called for prompt prosecution of drug cases, saying expeditious prosecutions could be one way to remedy the Kush issue in the country.

The CoPG chair said the surge in Kush deaths could be averted if the current drug cases at the various courts are robustly and expeditiously prosecuted.

“Where are the cocaine and heroin that wereapprehended in this country? Nobody talks about them anymore. If the government really wants to fight the issue of drugs, then there should be implementation of laws in the drug and drug related cases. Our judicial system is very slow. We have a bunch of pending cases there but they keep dragging cases. We don’t know the type of job they are doing and where they are heading in this country,” Cham told The Voice following the recent surge of Kush deaths.

He stated that the judiciary is not delivering asexpected, suggesting that the President should start sacking people that are not executing their duties diligently.

“It is sad that none of that is happening and people are backing each other and backing corruption and corrupt officers. Besides, the issue of drug use is all about corruption as it starts from the top and the question is how these drugs are smuggled into the country and who is responsible,” he lamented.

He further stated that the fight against drugs requires a concerted effort, adding that the number of Gambian youth dying in the Mediterranean Sea and Sahara desert is uncountable.

“The remaining ones left for our future generation are also dying all in the name of a substance. This is sad and calls for an urgentaction from the authorities,” Cham stated.

The CoPG chair extended condolences to the families of the deceased youths and called on the government to deploy more police officers across the communities, saying the police and the DLEAG are doing their job by apprehending a lot of drug dealers but that the citizens want to see prosecution of those cases.
