Former chairman of the Gambia Victims’ Centre forHuman Rights Violation Demba Ali Jawo has said thathe expected to be more involved in running the affairs of the centre than just being required to approve cheques.
Jawo told this medium that the specific dynamics of hisresignation had to do with the style of administration that he had found in the centre which, he said, was more centered around the secretariat and virtually sidelining the board.
“I had expected as board chair, I should have been more involved in the running of the center than just being required to approve cheques when I hardly had access to the operating budget or the state of the finances,” Mr. Jawo told The Voice following his resignation as the victims’ centre chair.
Asked whether his resignation would not have a dampening impact on the spirit of the victims’ community, Mr. Jawo said: “I don’t think my resignation would have any negative bearing on the quest for justice because I have no doubt in the ability of those in charge of the center to continue to seek Justice for the victims.”
Mr. Jawo recently tendered his resignation as thechairman of the Victims Centre for Human Rights Violations on 12 June 2024, saying when he was unanimously elected chair in September 2023, he had specific ideas about his role but that over time, he realized the situation was different from what he anticipated. D.A said despite his efforts, he couldn’t align with the existing dynamics.
