Man in Court for Allegedly Abducting Girl

Modou Beyai appeared before magistrateFatou Darboe-Jaguraga of BrikamaMagistrates’ Court for purported abduction of the victim.

The prosecution was represented by Cadet ASP Mamjarra Ngum, while the accusedperson was not represented.

The indictment forwarded by the police indicated that the accused is charged with”abduction,” contrary to section 124 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Gambia.

The particulars of offence alleged that ModouBeyai on 31st May 2024 at Makumbaya and its diverse places, West Coast Region of the Republic of The Gambia, intended to carnallyknow the victim and detained her at Darsilameh village without her consent, thereby committed an offence.

He denied the liability of the offence. However, he said the girl is his girlfriend and had gone out with her willingly to a program/party but has never abducted her.

According to the criminal code, the offence isa felony and, if found guilty, is liable to imprisonment for seven years.

The prosecution sought adjournment and didn’tobject to the bail of the accused person.

The accused person was admitted to bail in the sum of D60,000.00 with two Gambian suretieswho shall be deposed to sworn to an affidavit.

Matter is set for resumption on July 15, 2024, for commencement of proceedings.
