Bundung’s Water Shortage Lingers

The more than decade-old water problem in Bundunglingers on despite the many public outcry and outburst over it.

NAWEC has yet to bury a grave for the perennial problem and residents have vented their continuing frustration over the issue with this reporter.

Resident Amie Joof said Bundung’s water dearth gets worse by each passing day.

“I couldn’t see any improvement as regards the availability of water in Bundung. In fact, the water problem is worsening. The only time we see water coming from our taps is the ungodly hours 3am or 4 am, which is a difficult time for a lot of people to wake up and fetch water,” she said.

She added that they use tank water for literally everything.

“We fetch water from tank owners around the area where we pay for each bucket of water for D5 or more, depending on the quantity and we use this tank water for consumption which may not even be healthy,” she highlighted.

Another Bundung resident Fatou Gibba said that the water shortage has been seriously affecting the people of Bundung, especially the women.

“If you look around, women are always fetching water and sometimes we carry water on our head from long distances and it’s really tiring. I have been fetching water for as long as I can remember and sometimes, I wonder how this will ever end. We the women are really tired,” she lamented.

She made a passionate call on NAWEC and other stakeholders to help fix Bundung’s water problem.

“At this point, we need this problem fixed and I’m urging NAWEC and everyone responsible for the water sector to help us because water is essential in our lives and we can’t do without it,” she stated.

Resident Adama Badjie also added her voice to the growing chorus of voices, clamouring for a sustainable solution to Bundung’s water woes. She stated that she has no hope for Bundung when it comes to water because all their appeals for water intervention fell on deaf ears.
