The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has greenlighted a protest against the Judicial Officers’ Bill and the National Assembly Salaries and Pensions Bill planned to be staged later today.

A group calling itself Concerned Citizens has sought a permit from the police to vent their opposition to the bill in a streetprotest.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. DawdaJallow, recently tabled the Judicial Officers’ Remuneration Bill at the National Assembly but the bill has proved controversial ina lot of quarters as its critics said its motivation to increase the salary, allowances, gratuity and pensions of judicial officers, including judges is not only discriminatory but a burden on the country’s palpitating economy.

The National Assembly Salaries and Pension Bill generated a similar controversy.

The Concerned Citizens group has been granted the police permit to protest over the bills and the protest is expected to begin at Bund Road at 12pm today and end at the National Assembly at 2pm, where the group is expected to deliver a petition to representatives of the legislature and justice ministry, respectively.
