The City Link Ostend Banjul Project in partnership with Women Initiative Gambia, on Tuesday, 9th July 2024 commenced a two-week training on soap making and recycling of used tires into furniture.
The trainees comprised 15 women gardeners with an optimum aim of equipping the women with the skills and knowledge to produce soap and recycling and training others to discover their hidden potential skills.
Soap making, packaging, and business training are all crucial for local women thus it will help them to be self-reliant and become an entrepreneur.
Commenting on the training exercise, Ousman Jobe, Project Coordinator of the City Link Ostend-Banjul Project expressed gratitude to the European Union for sponsoring the project while emphasizing the importance of the training to the trainees.
Noting that business training fosters confidence and leadership skills, enabling women to take on more significant roles in their communities and advocate for their rights and needs.
Isatou Ceesay, Director and Founder of Women Initiative Gambia disclosed that it is 15 women selected for the training out of 100 applicants.
She stressed the importance of the training and encouraged the participants to actively engage in the training and ask questions so that they could fully understand the process.
More so, she elaborated that the training would empower the women to produce soap and other items, as well as train others who did not have the opportunity to participate.
Annette Camara, Communication Officer of the City Link Ostend-Banjul Project, highlighted the importance of the training to the trainees while urging them to make good use of the training opportunity.
One of the participants, Haddy Coker, a member of the Crab Island Women’s Gardner shed light on the benefits the garden has for them and also expressed gratitude to the European Union and the Banjul City Council for the opportunity.
She added that the just-started training would help them provide for their families. She therefore assured everyone that they would actively engage in the training exercise.
