As part of enhancing smallholder farmers’ capacity in Upper Nuimi, North Bank Region, the Action Aid International The Gambia Juffureh Office Local Rights Programme 9 has disbursed over D400,000.00 to 18 beneficiaries as they wrapped up a two-day training for farmers on Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture (CRSA) methods and practices on Tuesday.
Also, AAITG supported the beneficiaries with small ruminant breeding farm equipment, donkeys, shine hoes, and seeders, and also gave fishing gear to the youth.
The training and presentation were held at the AAITG Juffurehoffice, and the training among other things was meant to strengthen farmers’ capacity on adopting climate-smart agriculture to mitigate food security and economic development.
Saikou Darboe, Programme Manager AAITG Juffureh Office underscored the significance of building farmers’ capacity on the Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture (CRSA) concept to enhance food and nutrition security.
However, 9 beneficiaries received D32,000 each for farm implements while the remaining 9 received D9,000 each for small ruminants and fishing equipment to strengthen resilient buildings and mitigate the effect of climate change.
The support would contribute to increasing households’ food security and reduce poverty.
He used the moment to thank ECO ZONES committees for their support in the identification of selected beneficiaries while assuring them of the AAITG Juffureh office support as the need arose.
Presenting the cheques on behalf of ActionAid Head of the Finance Department, Kadijatou Dibaga reiterated the significance of the project and the organization in the fight against social injustice and poverty reduction.
She called on beneficiaries to be goodwill Ambassadors of ActionAid and Eco Zones Committees on the judicious use of funds to bring social change and accountability.
Ndikeh Bah a small ruminant beneficiary from Juffureh thanked ActionAid for the support and noted that the animals would contribute greatly to promoting human security and that as a female-headed household, it will help to promote social cohesion.
Sainey Saho, Agricultural Officer at Juffureh, a lead trainer, said training farmers on Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture methods and practices is fundamental in building sustainable resilience, and attainment of food and nutrition security.
