The Vice President, Muhammed B.S Jallow, will be at the head of a delegation of senior government functionaries and technicians that will this weekendembark upon a tour of disaster hotspots and projects implemented under the Office of the Vice President, the NDMA executive director Mr. Sanna Dahabainformed this reporter on Wednesday.
According to Mr. Dahaba, the tour is aimed atproviding the vice president and delegation the ground truths about some of the projects that the NDMA and other departments and agencies under his purview have executed in parts of the country such as flood mitigation, educational and nutritional interventions in the CRR, URR and other parts of the country.
As part of its flood mitigation measures, the government is currently supporting engineering worksaround Basse Giroba Kunda and Samba Tacko to reduce the impact of floods on the population around that area.
“If you come to Saami Suruwaa Kunda, Saami Pachonki, Saami Omar Jula, Saami Medina; all these satellite villages form a cluster and in between them, erosion has made a serious formation there and whenever it rains, the schoolchildren in all these satellite villages cannot access the main lower basic school. So, the government is implementing a flood mitigation measure by creating water holding points and also constructing a culvert around that end,” explained the NDMA boss.
He further explained that the NDMA also collaborated with WACA this year to clean all the flood-susceptible streets that are connected to the Kotu stream to reduce flooding.
Mr. Dahaba said his agency had also partnered with the BCC and KMC, respectively to clean gutters and other areas in Banjul and the Kanifing Municipality to lessen the impact of flooding.
He recalled how the flooding was contained last year as a result of the mitigation measures that the NDMA and partners implemented.
